FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This depends on a couple of factors, but the EV charging cable you choose doesn’t directly affect the price. The cost to charge your electric car will depend on how much charge your car needs and how much your electricity provider is charging you. We often advise to charge your car at night, as the price of electricity is lower. Also, you can find FREE places to charge your electric cars, such as local garden centres, car parks and much more.

When you first buy an electric car, it should come with an EV charging cable. Unfortunately, this cable is usually only 5m long. This will cause a problem for EV drivers who have a socket or charging station over 4.5 meters away. Fortunately, you can buy a replacement cable from EV King. We provide EV cables in a variety of different lengths, including 15 and 20-meter options.

No, not all EV charging cables are the same. They come with different connectors, charge speeds, charging point, length, and types of charging cables.

  • Connectors – These are at the end of each cable and come in type 1, type 2, CSS or a CHAdeMO
  • Charge speeds – This relates to how much power your cable can handle. In the UK, this ranges from 10amp to 22kw.
  • Lengths – How long is the EV cable?
  • Types – You have three different types: tethered charging cables, portable charging cables and standard charging cables (Type 2 to Type 2 connectors)

Yes, the EV charging cable you use for a plug-in hybrid will also work with an electric car. As long as the connectors and the amperages match up, the cable will charge both cars perfectly.

Several factors contribute to the high cost of EV electric vehicle charging cables. These include:

  • Raw materials: The raw materials used to build EV charging cables, such as copper, are relatively costly.
  • More amperage: An EV charging cable is specially designed to handle high amperage. These are seven-way cables with thicker diameter wires to withstand weather, sunlight, and external damage. Thus, they cost more.
  • Low retail volume: Unlike dryer cables or USB cables, you won’t find an electric car charging cable in any hardware store. These are low-volume products, and hence, expensive.

Yes, you can. No legislation makes placing a charging cable on the pavement or footpath illegal. However, it could cause a potential hazard as pedestrians could trip over the cable and fall over. This might attract a personal injury claim.

Ideally, if you want to place your electric charging cable on the pavement, be sure to remove it as soon as charging is done.

Another great alternative is to use a cover for your electric vehicle charging cable. A rugged cable cover made from plastic or rubber will help people avoid tripping over your cable. Some cable covers come with yellow warning strips as well.

Level 1 chargers require a 120-volt standard AC plug and a Level 1 EVSE cable with a J1722 connector at one end and a standard three-prong plug at the other. Level 2 chargers require 240V AC plugs found in most UK households.

Level 1 and level 2 chargers are universal. Therefore, you can charge your electric car from any level 1 or level 2 charging plugs.

Level 3 charging (DC fast charging), however, requires specific types of plugs. Type 1, Type 2, Type 2 Combo, and CHAdeMO are common level 3 charging plug types. They are often found in public charging. DC charging standards may vary among regions and model manufacturers. For example, type 2 plugs are the standard in the UK and the rest of Europe.

The national average cost to install a 240-volt Level 2 charger is £800, though the costs could vary between 600 and 2,000 pounds. The cost of installing a Level 1 charger is even lower, with the average cost being around 200-250 pounds.

Be sure to choose an installer with experience and certifications. Treat the installation just like an electrical job.
