($25-$35 | 7pm & 9pm shows) The Century Room welcomes acclaimed bassist Or Bareket to the stage. Bareket last performed at the Century Room with Ben Wendel’s band and now makes his debut as a leader featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Jeremy Corren on piano, and Savanah Harris on drums.

**Or Bareket**

Born in Jerusalem to parents of Moroccan, Iraqi, Argentinian, and Eastern European descent, raised between Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, and based out of Brooklyn since 2011, Or Bareket is one of the most prominent bassists of his generation, as well as a composer and bandleader with an eclectic yet meticulously cohesive approach.

Bareket’s distinct lyricism, rhythmic dexterity, and groove-centric approach are clearly present in his playing and writing alike. Growing up tri-lingual, Bareket is fascinated by how different languages and cultures intersect and diverge. His creative process is an investigation of spaces between and within languages, continuously synthesizing the different worlds he inhabits into a personal aesthetic that honors all of them: his ancestral North African and Latin-American folklores, his life-long study of Black American music, and his experiences making music with some of today’s foremost artists across a wide range of musical generations and stylistic orientations; Bareket has worked extensively with bands led by the likes of Joel Ross and Ari Hoenig, and has performed with artists such as Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Ben Wendel, Leon Parker, Aaron Parks, Hamilton de Holanda, Anat Cohen,Sam Yahel, Gilad Hekselman, Taylor Eigsti, Marta Sanchez, Aaron Goldberg, and Sullivan Fortner in different settings.

Comedy without the competition.

In August 2021, local Comedians Priscilla Fernandez, Mo Urban and Amber Frame created Lady Haha: a comedy open mic for women, LGBTQ+, all marginalized folx and our allies to perform ANY genre of comedy (not just stand-up) in a supportive and super fun environment. Whether it’s your first time trying comedy or your thousandth—all levels of experience are welcome! Everyone gets at most 5 minutes of stage time, and it’s free!

Anyone 21+ can come watch, but the stage is reserved for marginalized-funny people and our allies. Our only rule is “no hate speech” (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and violent speech).

Lady Haha also produces comedy-variety shows in Tucson with an emphasis on diversity and all genres of comedy.

We’re proud to say we are the first and only comedy open mic of its kind—IN THE WORLD—right here in little ol’ Tucson, AZ. We hope to see more of these popping up!

($20-$30 tickets | 7pm & 9pm shows) Emerging from an extended hibernation, local band Tesoro returns for their first public show in over 8 years at the Century Room at the Hotel Congress. Brian Scott and Justin Fernandez will be performing as a duo, traversing the band’s catalog from the past 20 years and showcasing new music.

Tesoro beautifully and adeptly mixes the diverse styles of puro flamenco, rumba, cumbia, Latin pop and rock along with a perfect measure of funk and blues – all the while incorporating its signature powerful rhythms into infectiously heartfelt, unforgettably passionate, romantically catchy tunes. Tesoro’s songs are richly textured and beautifully complex while remaining completely accessible.

MUSIC OF THE GREAT SWING ERA

Wholly Cats Swing Club are Tucson’s ambassadors of the Great Swing Era, specializing in the music of the Benny Goodman Sextet featuring America’s first Guitar Hero, Charlie Christian. They have quickly gained a following as Tucson’s premier Swing Band and have been performing at several dance and jazz venues in the area while helping give rise to the live local dance scene.

The band was formed by Marc Rosen and Tony Spear, whose mutual love of these artists sparked an idea for a dance band with multi-generational appeal. In addition to the songs of Goodman and Christian, their repertoire includes popular classic hits by Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Louis Armstrong, Louie Prima and even contemporary artists like Tom Waits and Imelda May.

Since his neo-psychedelic Green On Red days, Chuck Prophet has been turning out country, folk, blues, and Brill Building classicism. After a false start recording in his hometown of San Francisco, Prophet decided to get out of Dodge and found himself re-energized in Upstate New York, just a few miles from the Vermont border, to make 2020’s The Land That Time Forgot, a record that is as much a 21st century exorcism as it is America.

Written mostly with Prophet longtime collaborator and co-conspirator Klipschutz, the songs that inhabit The Land That Time Forgot come at you from an array of locations both real and imagined, including San Francisco’s Tenderloin, an English roundabout, and Nixonland, while hanging out with the ghosts of Johnny Thunders, Willie Wonka, and John the Baptist, and contemplating the train that carried Abraham Lincoln home for the final time.

To complement the critically acclaimed album, in early 2022, Prophet released The Land That Time Forgot Revisited, a four-song digital live EP recorded at the Make Out Room in San Francisco featuring “Meet Me at the Roundabout,” “Womankind,” “Fast Kid,” and “Kiss Me Deadly,” with his band, the Mission Express, and a string quartet (the Makeout Room Quartet).

“I know a little bit about how to craft a studio LP,” says Prophet. “But recording live with a string quartet on a linoleum floor on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in an empty barroom in San Francisco’s Mission District is something different. For one thing, there is an actual “arranger.” Like Nelson Riddle. Or what Randy Newman does, adding his own secret sauce to the compositional gene pool that has scored half the soundtracks in Hollywood history. They’re a new way into the songs and an adventure finding our way out. There’s still an acoustic Mission Express in the mix, along with the strings. Three songs from The Land That Time Forgot reimagined, plus a Lita Ford cover that has to be heard to be believed.”
