Pediculosis capitis (head lice infestations) occur in all age groups, but especially in elementary school children. In most cases, transmission occurs by head-to-head contact.1 Pharmacologic treatment is recommended for persons with live lice or eggs (nits) within 1 cm of the scalp. Topical pediculicides should be tried first. Oral therapy is occasionally required for refractory infestations.

The FDA has approved vamorolone (Agamree – Catalyst), an oral corticosteroid, for treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in patients ≥2 years old. Vamorolone is the second oral corticosteroid to be approved in the US for treatment of DMD; deflazacort (Emflaza) was approved in 2017.1
THE DISORDER ― DMD is an X-linked, recessive, progressive neuromuscular disorder (estimated prevalence 1:5000 live male births) characterized by low levels or a complete absence of the protein dystrophin in muscle cells, which is essential for maintenance of myocyte integrity.2 Patients with DMD experience progressive muscle weakness and usually become nonambulatory by their early teenage years. Death due to cardiac or respiratory failure almost always occurs by age 40.
