Shell-erbrating World Turtle Day! 🐢

Turtles have been roaming the earth since the days of the dinosaurs and play critical roles in food chains, food webs, and ecosystems.

The U.S. is fortunate to have 60 different species of turtles (this includes tortoises, as all tortoises are turtles although not all turtles are tortoises). There are more species of turtles in the U.S. than any other single country on earth. Some of those species in fact, live ONLY in the U.S, meaning they are endemic.

Turtles are also among the most imperiled vertebrate animals in the world, with over 61% of them either threatened, endangered, or already extinct. They are extremely vulnerable to the exotic pet-trade, and are often taken from their homes in the wild to participate in turtle races or to be kept as family pets.

On Saturday, May 25th from 9:00am – 3:00pm, the Topeka Zoo will celebrate World Turtle Day with activities around the zoo for kids of all ages. There will be make and take crafts for kids, and live turtles walking the sidewalk to meet and greet you! 🐢

Good morning from handsome Hoho! ☀️🐻

Fun fact: Sun bears are crepuscular, meaning their activity level peaks during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk.

Heads up, our Tropical Rainforest has gained two new pairs of wings! 🦇🌴

Meet male Flying fox ‘Lippy’ and our yet-to-be-named female Roseate spoonbill. These two new re-zoo-dents just joined the free-flight dome within the past few weeks and are still getting used to their new home.

Indian flying foxes are also known as fruit bats. Lippy is here to join our pre-existing colony of bats, but has yet to fully join the group that likes to hang out near the top of the dome. While we ask that you be courteous and give him space, now is the perfect time to see him as he likes to hang in lower areas that are more visible.

You’re even more likely to spot our female Roseate spoonbill! While she perches in trees and at the top of the waterfall- her bright pink coloration makes her stand out. Spoonbills are aptly named for their broad, spatulate bill that is perfect for scooping up insects, small crustaceans, and tiny fish from the shallow waters they wade in.

We hope you stop by and see our new friends soon! To purchase tickets, visit https://store.topekazoo.org/#/Admission 🌴🦇
