The Garden
by Siân Davey
Gardens have always served as metaphor and microcosm of the world. In story, Eden is the place humanity comes from, and it is the return to this first garden that guides our highest ideals. Among the mullein and sunflowers, Davey’s subjects found the peace embedded in such a garden, where division and shame, loss and heaviness, was, if only for a moment, gone from the world. The Garden became a reflection on who she had become. After three years of tending to the flowers, Davey and her son could no longer keep up the maintenance and gave the garden back over to it’s own nature. “Nature just wants to give,” says Davey. “You try to limit it, and it will find a crack. Nature just keeps on being beautiful.”
