May is Alaska Native Plant Month!

Our Watershed Stewardship Program Manager is expanding our Invasive Plant Management Program in the Copper Basin and Cordova with weed pull floats on rivers where white sweet clover spreads like wildfire in the Copper Basin, getting the youth involved through education and internship programs. In Cordova, the focus will be on managing Orange Hawkweed and Reed canarygrass.

Many hands pull more weeds, so consider volunteering at an upcoming event this spring to help manage invasive species in your local area to make room for Alaska Native Plants to thrive.

Help us celebrate Alaska Native Plant Month, which encourages Alaskans to recognize the importance of native plants to Alaska’s people, economy, and ecosystems by celebrating Alaska Native Plant Month in May 2023.

Alaska joins nearly 50 states that have established a native plant month. The effort to establish one in Alaska this year began when The Garden Club of America reached out to the Alaska Native Plant Society about its initiative to encourage a native plant month in all 50 states.

Insect pollinators, birds and other wildlife have co-evolved with our native plants. We can help protect them by removing non-native invasive species, planting native shrubs, trees and flowers in our yards, and following ethical harvesting practices.
