Why are we publishing yet another print magazine?

Well, here's our answer

Reading vs watching

Reading is the most efficient way of learning new information. When we say “the most efficient,” we don’t necessarily mean the easiest or the fastest — we refer to how much information you absorb relative to the total content consumed. To understand this idea better, consider the following example. When you watch a video, you may feel like you understand its main argument perfectly well. But in most cases, you’ll struggle to remember it later. This happens because you’re passively consuming the video’s content without making the conscious effort to integrate the information and create new knowledge. In other words, your attention is drawn to the words and images but not to the ideas they’re supposed to represent. By contrast, the unique format of our magazine sparks the imagination and delivers complex ideas clearly, efficiently, and without any unnecessary distractions.

Paper vs iPad

What was the last thing you did on your phone? Was it checking your messenger or scrolling social media feeds? The constant flow of notifications and pop-ups train us to feel like we’re constantly missing out on something important. In fact, there is an entire industry fighting for your attention via your gadget’s screen, and it’s probably winning. But there is a chance of resisting it! Our magazine is a learning space free of pop-ups and ads, and it doesn’t have to be plugged in or recharged. You can take it anywhere you want, and it’s yours for life.

OYLA vs others

Here are just a few things:
– No ads
– High-quality content
– Accessibility

You may think that these features on their own are nothing special, but we’re offering the complete package: 100 pages of science knowledge, colorful graphics, and engaging activities with no ads or distractions.

And this is why we’re publishing “another” print magazine — there’s really nothing like it!

OYLA'S MISSION

OYLA is suitable for all ages and genders. We believe in empowering our young readers to ask questions about the world around them and make their own scientific discoveries.

American popular science magazine for kids and parents.

Outstanding. As a former classroom educator, both middle school and elementary, these are HIGH INTEREST and utilize all the necessary non-fiction reading skills. The science is solid, not watered down to the point of incorrect. The articles are written so well that my husband and I enjoy reading them as well. This magazine continues to impress and deliver. This is the first periodical that I will continue a subscription for as it is the only one that stays super relevant AND interesting.

I purchases two back issues for my 11 year old granddaughter while she was out visiting on vacation. She already has a subscription she absolutely loves. She loves learning and soaking up new scientific knowledge. She even has her mother hooked on the magazine. Together they explore and research anything they don't quite understand. This will be an ongoing subscription throughout her teen years.

Our STEM loving family loves this magazine!
My 11 year old kid LOVES this magazine. He is very interested in math, science, history, and engineering and he looks forward to receiving the new magazine every month, reads it cover to cover, saves them and rereads them! The articles are well written and thorough and spot-on with accuracy. Our family is grateful to have a magazine we can all read, parents and interested kid alike.

Parent enjoys the quality of Oyla!
Honestly, I enjoy this magazine more than my son. There is variety of topics, photos are clear but do not overwhelm the articles, and articles are well-written and understandable. While it is not super important, the paper the magazine is printed on is sturdy, which I like because I save every issue for future reference because the topics are relevant to the world today. It is a high quality product.

My kids LOVE their OYLA subscription!
My kids (9 and 11) have been receiving (and reading) OYLAs for almost a year now and we will continue to do so. They are SO excited when a new one arrives in the mail addressed to them and they read them cover to cover They learn SO many new things and teach me and their dad. Just last week, my son took the magazine to school to ask his teacher to explain a math concept in the magazine b/c he didn't quite understand it. His teacher didn't either, but she took him to another math class so they could both dig in and figure out the math concepts in the article together. I love seeing them engage with the content, with no encouragement from their parents.

Connecting with my grandkids
When I first saw this magazine, I thought it would be great for my grandkids, ages 16,14,12 in one family and 11 and 9 in the other. I gave subscriptions to both families as well as myself and now I facetime with both once an month to discuss the current issue. We cover most of the articles and I try to bring in my own experiences. It has been a wonderful way to keep in touch with them as I live in Oregon and they are in Arizona. A big reason I wanted to do this is 4 of the 5 are girls and I wanted to expose them to STEM type education. It has been a educational experience for them as well as myself. I've recommended the magazine to friends who have children in this age group also. Thank you for a great magazine and NO ADS!!

I'm homeschooling and my husband bought us a subscription. I assign the kids an article summary once a week. They read through the magazine and pick an article, read and summarize it on a worksheet, and are to be prepared to discuss it during school time. It has opened up a lot of interesting and fun conversations!

My son loves his!! He gets so excited when they arrive and enjoys having them to read at school for downtime. We are on our second year and it's worth every penny. My son got recognized by his science and interactive arts teachers last year because he always has something useful to share.

Why are we committed to keeping our magazine ad-free?

That’s a good question! In any other magazine, advertisements can take up 30-60% of all page space. We stand by our decision, which is based on the very values we want to empower our readers with: critical thinking and creative problem-solving.

OYLA is the print magazine equivalent of ad-free streaming. We’ve cut out the noise so you and your kids can focus on the good stuff.

Our magazine OYLA works exclusively on income from subscriptions.

That way, the magazine can be focused solely on the interests of our readers.
