Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap with 318 curves in 11 miles: America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road.

Designated US 129, the road is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest with no intersecting roads or driveways to hamper your travel. It is considered “the destination” for thousands of motorcycle and sports car fans throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Can you brave it? It’s best to be cautious as the turns are tight, but the Tail of the Dragon is guaranteed to be the ride of your life.

The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming a destination too, with its remote 60 miles of breathtaking scenic mountain highway. The area also has other incredible roads like the Moonshiner 28, Foothills Parkway, Smoky Mountain Loop, Devils Triangle, Blue Ridge Parkway, The Gambler NC209, Diamondback 226, Devil's Staircase, Six Gap North Georgia, The Snake US421 and many Great Forest Service Dual Sport and Jeep Roads.

Paving Update

** US129 PAVING UPDATE 5/12/24**

Paving process began during the first week of May on the US129 section of Tail of the Dragon. They are currently patching the problem sections and pulloffs, so you will find section of the road with new pavement. The new sections are smooth and clean.

Paving will have short sections of lane closures during daylight hours MONDAY thru THURSDAYS. The Dragon is OPEN and does NOT close during paving. You'll find the lane closures only on the section they are working on, NOT the entire road. The sections are relatively short and the delay is not long. They follow up with a sweeper to pick up most of the paving debris.

The paving must be completed within 35 calendar days of the start date. So ideally the paving will be complete sometime in mid to late June.

Please check here and our social media for updates.

Just ran across this news item from the Washington (N.C.) Daily News dated Thursday July 6, 1939:

"There isn't a grander, more beautiful drive in North Carolina than that from Topton through Robbinsville, along the edge of Lake Santeetlah, across Deal's Gap and into Tennessee."

As long as it's nice in September! PAVE ON! 🤘🏻

I drove it yesterday in a cage....and yes the new pavement is smooth but its deffinetly NOT the best pavement job I've ever seen.....the transition points between new and old... especially the end points definitely could be better.... a very pronounced bump at the start points of each new section as well as there is already a large delaminated section with a rather large track of missing pavement right in the middle of the lane in the middle of a sharp curve in the outside lane returning towards the TN fence line. I passed an accident, don't know if the surface was a factor.....the rider was leaned up against the clif...hope everything turned out OK.

What mile markers are the speed bumps?

I want to go there for sure this year 2024. Chico zumba #Dale

The men’s bathroom is interesting .. I’ve never seen a set up like that. Food and service was good tho, we would come back as our Honda group!

My motorcycle friends and I have been eating at Lynn's every year since 2007. Great spot. Don't forget the cobbler for desert!
